Meirav Gebler - redirecting the conventional
It is increasingly difficult to define art in its most popular painting form, so you'll understand that it's no easy feat gaining the painter's perspective. Fortunate for me however, I have been getting an insiders comprehension from our resident painter at Mister Rogers, and it's refreshing to say the least. For Meirav Gebler, a water color painter, her approach comes in the form of exposing the abstract from the conventional.
Over the past few weeks since taking up here residency, she has produced a couple paintings, some personal works and some commissions (hired projects). In this article, I will breakdown her personal process in a way that makes it relatable, giving insight and appreciation for her work.
In her own words, "when people ask me what style I paint, I respond that I make abstract landscapes". Although she lets the creativity flow with its own independence, she starts with a basic concept in leading the direction. Not all her painting are based on landscapes, but it's the landscape example that I will use as the anchor for relating.
I plummeted into this concept of "abstract landscapes", asking a series of questions (you can hear all my questions, in the audio interview below) garnering these results.
Meirav puts herself into a meditative state, when preparing to paint. A, for the reason of relaxing and submersing herself into her work, but also, to mentally direct her thoughts into the realm of the constant co-existence of energies unseen by the naked eye. It's these energies that are the dominant feature of her abstract landscape work. Picture this with me - We're standing on the top of a mountain, overlooking a breathtaking view (the foundation of a painting), of an endless clear-blue sky, birds soaring with ease in the distance, below you is a majestic lake, sapphire-blue in color and covered with a soft morning mist; it's breathtakingly brilliant.
But what about, what you're not seeing? What about all the environmental energies that are in a constant dance? Like the cool air from the lake mixing and intermingling with the heat from the sun? The wind vertex that enabled the birds to gracefully glide? Not too mention, all the spiritual energies that exist and are not usually accounted for when enjoying such a beauty. Its these energies that encapsulate Meriav's landscape paintings; exposing the abstract energies that get overlooked for its beauty and purpose.
You can see examples of her work on her website, www.meiravgebler.com, where you'll get an insight of what it is I am explaining in this article.
Meirav will be presenting her work at the up-coming For Locals By Locals event, happening on February 25th at Mister Rogers, 231 Rogers Ave in Crown Heights. Doors open at 8pm, come experience her paintings for yourself.
